Why should I talk to her? She didn't know Steve. It was different with Mum. She really liked him, I could tell. When she was mad, boy did she let him have it, almost as much as she gave me. Mum is good with words.
The trip took an hour. When we arrived the farmhouse was empty.
"Brian's at a friend's," Aunt Caroline explained. "He doesn't know you're coming yet, but I'm sure he'll be pleased."
He wasn't. I was sitting on the spare bed in his room reading when he got home, but I could hear every word because the walls of the house were so thin.
"It's not fair. You promised Robert could come for the holidays."
"I'm sorry, Brian, but you'll have Josh to play with."
"I don't see why Robert can't come too."
"There's only one spare bed."
"I'll sleep on the couch."
