By DIANA MENEFY
Aunt Caroline met me at Whangarei Airport. She was younger than Mum, but fatter and her grey hair wrinkled like a Steelo.
We collected Cav from his cage. "He's so big. I don't know how we'll get him in the boot," she said. In the end the groceries went in the boot with the farm supplies and Cav sat on the back seat.
"Our dogs aren't allowed in the car but then they're farm dogs, always dirty or wet," she said.
We sat in silence while she drove through the city. There was no motorway and hardly any traffic.
"I'm sorry about your friend. What was his name?"
"Steve."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"No."
"That's okay. If you feel like talking later just say so."
