By DIANA MENEFY
Cav's name was really Cavall. As a pup he looked like the golden hound in the picture of King Arthur and his knights, but then he grew, and grew, and grew.
Dad said he was a mongrel - Alsatian and Great Dane mix and God knows what else besides. He threatened to shoot Cav every time the newspaper came in chewed but I knew he didn't mean it.
"Don't read too late," Mum said. "We've got an early start in the morning. Goodnight, love."
"Night, Mum." I thumped my pillow, dumped my book on the floor, pushed Cav back down to the end of the bed and turned out the light.
No one could see my tears in the dark.
