KEY POINTS:
The Herald on Sunday is proud to sponsor Ringside Boxing Corporate Fight Night Round 2 on Saturday, June 16, at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland. As part of our sponsorship, we're bringing you some tips on boxing training.
This week, Mark Michaels answers questions about Ringside NZ's classes.
What can I expect from a class?
Ringside classes are usually one hour long and include a warm-up, which combines mobility exercises, technical skills and shadow boxing, followed by a main component where students work with each other as they execute a variety of technical drills and combinations, leading them to an energised state of body/mind.
Classes often wind down with a series of core stability techniques specific to boxing, followed by some breathing and stretching exercises. People often find they finish on a real high. This is aided by the fact that many of the daily stresses they may have had seem to have mysteriously disappeared.
Will I get hurt?
Ringside has a very strong ethic of protecting each participant from damaging themselves or others. For this reason, Ringside insists that all beginners complete a 12-week course before they are offered the option of attending a level with physical contact. The gym thus enables members to get the most enjoyment possible from their classes while being able to reach the levels they aspire to.
Do I need to be fit?
No specific level of fitness is required to start the initial beginner course or a private lesson, as long as you have not been advised otherwise by a medical practitioner. In the groups, you will be encouraged to work within your own limits and build on your fitness. All training is monitored and supervised by your instructor, who will offer advice and answer your questions.
How much does it cost?
As with most sporting activities, prices vary, with the quality and location of a session playing a part; $10-$15 is normal for a one-hour group class. Private lessons are always available but cost more. Book with a friend and split the cost.
How long does it take to become good?
We think good is a state of mind and is often determined by how we perceive ourselves. Being able to deliver most of the foundation techniques can take anywhere between three months to two years. Being able to fully understand everything we do takes more than a lifetime. There is always room for improvement and for furthering your understanding of the art.
Is it all men at the gym?
Boxing is a discipline for everybody, and there are no age, cultural or gender boundaries. This is reflected by the mix of people training in our classes, which are filled equally by men and women.
What should I wear?
Whatever is comfortable. T-shirts, singlets, shorts and tracksuit pants are all fine. The floor is fully matted, so you will not need trainers, but don't forget to bring a towel if you want to take a shower after class.
