KEY POINTS:
She liked it so much, she didn't buy the business, she became part of it instead. Natalie Routen used to love shopping at designer Lara Parker's boutique in Remuera. So when it came time to look for a job she simply asked if they had any openings.
"It just so happened Lara was looking to step away from the shop a bit," Routen explains. "So it was meant to be."
And while she's enjoying the role, it turns out this isn't the best job for saving money. "At the end of the week Lara gives me money," Routen jokes, "and usually I have to give at least some of it straight back."
Who are your favourite designers?
Lara Parker. I totally believe in where she's heading.
Whose wardrobe would you most like to raid?
Kirsten Dunst, Sienna Miller, Nicole Richie. Because I love the girls who set trends by not trying too hard.
What was the last item of clothing you bought?
An electric blue, high-waisted skirt from work. I'm wearing it with stockings and boots at the moment.
Best fashion movie?
Moulin Rouge, Marie Antoinette, Grease, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Great Gatsby, and My Fair Lady.
Who or what inspires you?
My boss, who started from scratch and is working her way up with passion and dedication to what she does.
Personal style quirk?
I wear nail polish every single day. It's my form of jewellery.
Your favourite accessory?
Black tights - they go with everything.
Any style icons?
I've grown up idolising Deborah Harry for her confidence, attitude and fun approach to clothes.
What can't you live without?
My Napoleon makeup stick.
What won't you be wearing this season?
Loads of bling, anything boho or freakishly geometric.
The one rule you always dress by?
I always wear clothes that have great tailoring because it just makes me feel more put together.
Best sartorial advice you ever had?
Your clothes must reflect your personality and allow you to express who you are.
When I was at high school?
I had a slight obsession with pink.
Most under-rated item in fashion?
This season's shift dress. It has staying power and always ends up being a wardrobe staple.
Best fashion bargain?
Vintage belts from church shops and markets. I love their uniqueness.
Is there anything you'd never wear?
Anything too embellished or with too many details. I like one focus to an outfit.
If money were no option?
I'd buy one of everything from work and a lifetime's supply of Chloe shoes.
