Redheads can put their minds at ease when going under the knife.
A previous study found the gene which gives them their bright orange crop also made them more sensitive to pain and more resistant to anaesthesia elevating the risk of waking up during an operation.
But Melbourne's Monash University, Professor of Anaesthesia, Paul Myles says they've now studied 460 people during and after surgery and have proven this wrong.
"Redheads respond to both the surgery itself and the need for pain medications exactly the same as people with other hair colours.''
But Mr Myles says their research did backup the finding that women are more resistant to anaesthetics.
