A promotional item for the series Six Feet Under aired by TVNZ about 7pm breached screening guidelines, the Broadcasting Standards Authority has ruled.
The "promo" portrayed one of the main characters, David, being kidnapped and later assaulted, robbed and left in a dark alley.
The series was rated "adults only" but the promo was screened during general viewing time on September 27 and 28.
Glenyss Barker, secretary of Viewers for Television Excellence, complained that scenes of the bloodied and distressed man apparently being forced to comply with violent theft was not suitable family viewing.
The authority said it acknowledged that TVNZ had taken some care in classifying the promo, but it expected children's interests to be recognised by the absence of PGR-rated promos before 7pm.
