A possible link between stomach issues and depression is being explored by a University of Canterbury PhD student.
Amy Romijn is looking at whether probiotics may be able to help some people with depression.
She says despite their widespread use, many people find that antidepressants have bad side effects, or that their benefits wane over time.
"For some people, they just don't work, so it's really important to explore every other kind of avenue for treatment."
Studies show one in six New Zealanders will experience serious depression at some time in their life.
