Prince William and Prince Harry will take part in an award ceremony to honour their late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.
The Prince of Wales will attend the Diana Legacy Awards at the Science Museum on Thursday evening to deliver a short speech to mark the charity’s 25th anniversary.
The Duke of Sussex will meet award winners virtually after the ceremony when he speaks to them from his home in California.
The brothers are not on speaking terms, but they are keen supporters of the Diana Award and have long championed the event. It is the only charity that bears the princess’ name, and honours people aged 9 to 25 who work to improve the lives of others.
However, they are not expected to be in the same room at the same time, even virtually.
Last year, the princes each recorded a video segment that was played during the ceremony.
Young people ‘can change the world’
William said he was proud to continue the belief shared by his mother that “when we invest in young people … they can truly change the world”.
Harry said his mother recognised the unique ability of young people to “challenge the status quo and push for a more inclusive and compassionate society”.
In 2022, the Duke of Sussex recorded a message to open the ceremony in which he said his mother had instilled in him a drive to speak up and fight for a better world.
William sent a written message saying there was no better way to celebrate his mother’s life than by recognising those who gave so much time to others.
In 2021, the event was held virtually and Harry recorded an address in which he praised his late mother for “living by truth and service to others” and for believing young people had “the power to change the world”.
He also addressed the first virtual ceremony in 2020 on behalf of himself and his brother.
Last joint engagement
The last official joint engagement the brothers carried out in person was the unveiling of their mother’s statue at Kensington Palace in July 2021.
The Diana Legacy Awards, founded in 2017, are held every two years to celebrate the achievements of 20 young leaders who are inspiring the next generation to follow in the late princess’ footsteps and have a positive impact on the world. The original Diana Award was founded in 1999.
Kensington Palace has confirmed Prince William will meet staff and supporters before joining the ceremony, during which he will make a short speech and present the awards.
Afterwards, he will meet the winners, who represent countries such as Australia, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Oman, Pakistan, Romania, the UAE, the UK and the US.
A spokesman for the Diana Award said: “The Duke of Sussex will be a key part of our Legacy Award celebration, which takes place over the course of this week.
