KEY POINTS:
A petite wee thing in an 80s puffball dress made a huge impact during Hailwood's Fashion Week show last year, with an energetic live performance of electro-pop and futuristic beats. That petite wee thing was Zoe Fleury, performing as Bionic Pixie.
"The concept of Bionic Pixie, is she's basically my alter-ego. In the sense of she's all Bionic minus her heart. I guess kind of like a superhero," says Fleury.
The 22-year-old, who also sings and plays drums as part of female two-piece The Bengal Lights, launched her solo Bionic Pixie project early last year and has since supported Peaches on her New Zealand tour. "I've been a drummer since I was 11 and never saw myself doing front person kind of things, but I'm really enjoying playing guitar and singing and still getting to play my drum pad is cool."
Like electro-queen Peaches, Fleury has a penchant for outlandish stage outfits, often inspired by Japanese fashion. Imagine lots of metallics, bright colours and leggings. We spoke to her to find out more about her unique style. And if you're heading along to the Big Day Out on Friday, make sure you check out Fleury as Bionic Pixie on the Green stage.
Who are your favourite designers?
Serena Fagence, who makes my stage outfits and little off stage numbers. She's amazing and has the craziest ideas. And Ksubi; I love their jeans and cute overalls.
When I'm on stage, I like to wear...
Serena Fagence's specially-made outfit. Plus high tops or my silver space boots!
What's your biggest indulgence or guilty pleasure?
Shoes. I can't get enough.
Who or what inspires you?
Everyone I work with with when making my music, and all my friends and family.
What's your favourite accessory?
One of my best friends Alisa [from The Naked and Famous] wrote the same answer for this one as she has one too. It's a miniature harmonica necklace that works. It's really cute. Whenever we can't find each other we blow our harmonicas.
Your best fashion bargain?
My colourful hightop Vans: I got them brand new, ridiculously cheap. And also my Pucci purple spandex heels!
Who does the best shoes?
I love hightops from most brands. Nike, Vans Converse and Circa are pretty awesome.
Who does the best jeans?
My favourite jeans at the moment are my Wrangler super skinny jeans with zips at the bottom. They were made for me, I swear!
What's your fashion obsession?
At the moment, shiny PVC or glittery things. Hair clips, shoe laces and jumpers. And all Hello Kitty accessories.
What do you wear to work?
Usually just jeans and sneakers, and some sort of hood or tights.
Favourite fashion-y movie?
Hmm, you can't beat Clueless. That movie rules.
Dress to impress whom?
Me, of course!
What is the most stylish city?
From the looks of what I've seen, by far, Tokyo.
Where is your favourite place to hang out and people watch?
Probably Mid City in Auckland. It has the coolest Japanese stores and wackiest fashion.
What's the silliest trend you've ever heard of?
Those jeans that are meant to show off builder's crack.
What's the best music to get dressed to?
At the moment probably Does it offend you, yeah?. It has got me out of the house a few times.
