KEY POINTS:
Whether you're interested in fashion or not, there's no doubt that when you dress, you're putting on an identity. And even before she started out as an actor, Caleigh Cheung knew this.
But in her new chosen career, the messages clothing sends have become even more important, and fun.
"I definitely dress up for auditions - the wardrobe is really significant as it can take me outside of myself," says the actor, whose most recent part was the lead character in TV2's Asian-bogan drama series Ride With The Devil.
While her character in the TV show favoured mini-skirts and other skanky girl-racer attire, and Cheung herself tends toward classics, this weekend she will be dressing differently again.
A green cheongsam tailored especially for her, will be her outfit of choice when she's onstage presenting performers, at this week's Lantern Festival. The popular annual event celebrates Chinese New Year and runs every night in Albert Park, from February 22 to 24.
Who are your favourite designers?
I love Natalie Chan for special occasions. She does some really gorgeous one-off evening dresses and has the cutest space above Cartier for Flowers in Parnell. With all the money in the world I would wear Marc Jacobs, Chloe and Zac Posen everywhere.
What was the last item of clothing you bought?
Two really cute tanks with a little bow from Natalie Chan. I bought a red one for Chinese New Year because you have to start the year off with something new.
What's your biggest indulgence?
My pale olive Bally boots from Sydney. I spotted them in the window on the way back to my hotel and knew I had to have them.
Who does the best shoes?
Marc Jacobs. He does great heels and they are really comfortable. My most favourite pair ever have been the little black polka-dot heels. I wore them for ages and finally ruined them in Tokyo because it rained so much.
The best jeans?
I keep going back to Sass and Bide, because they're comfortable and cut well for my size.
Your best beauty tip?
I believe beauty is literally on the inside. I take Usana Essentials and Omega-3 every day for good skin, hair and nails.
What can't you live without?
Moisture Mist translucent pressed powder in Bronze, and Circle Litener, both from Shiseido.
Is there anything you'd never wear?
I detest those ridiculous scarves that so many people are wearing. They look like really ugly tea towels draped around their necks.
What do you wear to work?
I usually roll on up in Nike tracks, trainers and hoodie. I don't bother dressing up unless I'm going to an event, although I always wear a bit of foundation mixed into my moisturiser.
Favourite fashion-y movie?
Cliche I know, but I love Breakfast at Tiffany's. I fell in love with it when I was 15 and I even had a long gold cigarette holder like the one Holly Golightly has in the party scene. The Conformist uses some really beautiful clothes too.
Personal style quirk?
I really like costumes and playing dress-up. I want one of those little Japanese Sailor Moon school uniforms.
