By BRENDAN CLARKIN
Out of the water, the creature's breath rasped, the only sound to be heard in the stillness of the night. The snakelike eyes flickered towards the shapes set back some distance from the shore. Shapes of buildings...cabins. Cabins containing people. The people were the danger the creature watched for. The threat the creature feared. The people did not know about the creature.
Yet!
I could hear my mother's voice screeching at me above the sound of the cake mixer.
`Brett Rigby! Are you listening to me? Are you sure you've got everything packed? Have you got your toothbrush? What about your socks...oh, and a towel? Now you make sure you have a shower every day, won't you? And don't forget to change your underwear.'
Ah...parents! I've said it before and I'll say it again. They are not human. They are designed to make life difficult for us, to drive us nuts. And boy, do my parents succeed. In fact, they nearly stopped me from going to school camp. Can you believe it?
