The darkness hanging over Pirate's Cover was almost complete. All that could be seen through the thick, black gloom was a blanket of mist hanging over the water. The water lapped quietly on the shore, the only movement to be seen in the cold hours before dawn.

Or was it the only movement? A sharp eye might have caught a glimpse of something, a hint of movement some distance from the shore. If anyone had been watching that is. Of course no one was looking out over the water at that time of the morning. Anyone with any sense was tucked up snugly in bed, sleeping peacefully.

But if someone had been watching, they might just have seen the ripples. Ripples widening in the wake of ... something?
