KEY POINTS:
It ain't called Blonde at the Bar for nothing. So here's my roundup of recently frequented Auckland bars.
Where: The Northern Club, Princes St, Auckland City
What: One of Auckland's most illustrious establishments, The Northern Club maintains its exclusivity through a strict members-only policy. Fortunately, the out-of-work actor happens to be a member so took Flicker and me for a wee Tuesday night tipple.
Clientele: Older, mostly male, seemingly well-to-do but actually just as boozy as the rest of us.
Overall impression: Surprisingly good fun. We made friends with some fellow members who'd been drinking since lunch and were soon swapping tales of celebrity encounters and industry gossip. Oh, and the barman Preston was delightful. We even got a kiss when we left.

Where: Shadows, Symonds St
What: Auckland University's student tavern. Recently renovated to become a Mac's Brew bar.
Clientele: Students. Mostly engineers, I'd wager, as it was Tuesday night and pub quiz was on.
Overall impression: No matter how you dress it up, Shads will always be Shads. Actually, I was surprised by how restrained the patrons were. Well, if you can consider forming a human pyramid, dropping your pants and flashing your nipples restrained.

Where: Verona, K Rd
What: Primo cafe by day, funky bar by night.
Clientele: A wide ranging assortment of inner-city Aucklanders.
Overall impression: Warm and ambient. A good spot to catch up with mates and shoot the breeze, though it became a touch difficult to hear once the DJ started playing. Do love those leather booths though

Where: The Living Room, Ponsonby Rd
What: A large Ponsonby lounge bar.
Clientele: Very George FM. That's not an insult, merely a description. Mid 20s upwards. Mix of suits and contempo casuals.
Overall impression: Wow, who knew so many people went out on a Wednesday night? And why do they all look so unhappy? As a bar, it's a nice space - lots of big comfy couches and gas fireplaces.
