Our fashion jury round up the best and worst looks on the Oscars red carpet.

Best dressed: Gwyneth Paltrow 16 years after the horror that was Gwynnie's pale pink sack, Gwyneth Paltrow lays the ghost to rest and proves she can be pretty in pink. On a lacklustre red carpet, this Ralph & Russo dress stood out for its clean, simple lines and bold shoulder embellishment. Her hair and makeup is equally understated, allowing her statement earrings to shine. Gorgeous.
Worst dressed: Laura Dern Everything about this look is a mess but her hair is downright crackerjack. The metallic fabric looks cheap and more like something that belongs at a school ball than the Oscars. Likewise, the necklace is too dominant and not refined or classy enough for an event of this calibre. She deserves better.
Best Dressed: Dakota Johnson Dakota Johnson wowed on the red carpet in a stunning Saint Laurent dress. It had such a beautiful line, and while it was seemingly simple, the crystal rope detail on one shoulder gave it a little edge. The neckline fit her perfectly and the colour definitely didn't blend in with the carpet. If ever you're not sure, keep it beautiful and simple, which is exactly what Dakota did.
Worst Dressed: Nicole Kidman I have so many issues with Nicole Kidman's attire. The pinky yellow sequins, the red belt, the silver shoes, and the white and silver box clutch. It looks like a child picked random things out of a dress-up box and handed it to her to wear. The best thing she was wearing was her smile, the rest of it, dreadful.

Best Dressed: Margot Robbie Showing off a shorter platinum crop simply styled and a bold red lip, Australian actress Margot Robbie was my Oscars standout. The plunging, blue/grey, sheer Saint Laurent gown was gorgeous, but it's that statement necklace that took Margot to the next level. The vintage Van Cleef & Arpels necklace was fit for a museum and was apparently created for the Duchess of Windsor in the 1930s. "This necklace right here is worth more than my life, [so I] better not lose it tonight," Margo told pint-sized Seacrest.
Worst Dressed: Will. I. Am Was he a train conductor, Beetlejuice, a Foot Locker employee or a fashionable prisoner? Will. I. Am got us all talking when he arrived in a casual striped shirt, what appeared to be sweat pants, black trainers and a stupid-looking train driver's hat. Sure, the popstar pulled on a black jacket to dress the ensemble up for the occasion, but that couldn't fix this hot, under-dressed, mess.

Best dressed: Rosamund Pike There was so much to love, from Gwyneth's shoulder in bloom, to statement necklaces from Cate, Margot and Scar-Jo. But best-dressed for me was Rosamund Pike in red custom Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci. The scarlet, strapless dress with the scalloped detail apparently took 2000 hours to make, and it showed. Exquisite embroidery on a silhouette that hugged her every curve. And matching red strappy heels too.
Worst dressed: Felicity Jones There was a lot to hate too, from Naomi Watts' sports bra, to Lady Gaga's red rubber gloves, Marion Cotillard's backroom bum business, and Laura Dern's crazy fringe. But worst dressed goes to Felicity Jones and her matronly McQueen number in the unflattering hue of ashen-grey. The actress (well, her stylist) was doing so well this awards season. The bottom part looks like a duchesse satin costume crinoline that belongs better on a French aristocrat in revolutionary times. Let her eat cake! Oh wait, she has? Oh no, they're not crumbs on her bodice. Nor anemones. It's an embellished mess on a get-up that has more drama than a Kanye West stage intervention.
