KEY POINTS:
Natasha Wright has lofty dreams of one day having her own fashion label and being the creative director of an international fashion magazine - and she may well get there. At only 21, the ambitious Wright has already travelled to New York where she studied at the prestigious Parsons Design School (of Project Runway fame), as well as designing a range of clothing for Elle magazine. The opportunity to design the collection, which will be available through Stardoll.com, came about when Wright worked at the Designers' Management Agency, which represents brands including Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Ralph Lauren. During her time in New York she also managed to work as Karen Walker's assistant during New York Fashion Week.
Now back home in New Zealand, Wright has designed a range of special cards featuring her illustrations of fashionable outfits, available at Drop Dead Gorgeous and to order. "I've always adored drawing, and from the age of 2 I've hardly had a pencil out of my hand," she says.
Wright describes her illustrations as "a bit quirky but very fashionable and full of movement. My cards are a collection of outfits I would love to own!" Lust-worthy outfits reflective of Wright's own sartorial style include cute tiered dresses, oversized tees and leggings, and boho tunics. She tells us a little bit more about her own wardrobe...
Who are your favourite designers and why?
Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld and, of course, Karen Walker. When I was in New York I was lucky enough to work for Christian Siriano while he prepared for his first showing at New York Fashion Week. His clothes, just like Christian, have a fabulous sense of drama and excitement!
What was the last item of clothing you bought?
A black Karen Walker sweetheart dress. This is an early 21st present that has already been used several times.
Best fashion bargain?
A crochet cardigan I bought for $6 from the Salvation Army. I have had it for years and it's my summer essential.
Who or what inspires you and why?
My love of design and fashion is a constant source of inspiration as I am truly passionate about what I do. When I was studying in New York, I was constantly inspired by creative individuals from all around the world.
Your most cherished item?
My grandmother's gold chain. I wear it with everything from T-shirts to little black dresses.
Who does the best shoes?
Miu Miu. My favourites are my brown wedges which were a great bargain at half price from Barneys in San Francisco.
Who does the best jeans?
I live in J Brand jeans. They do a great skinny leg cut which fits me perfectly! I have them in both black and dark indigo.
What can't you live without?
My family and gorgeous boyfriend who are so supportive.
What's one thing that everyone should have in their wardrobe?
For summer, a great pair of sunglasses is always essential. Every year I update my collection.
What endures throughout the seasons?
Denim will always be a staple which will be constantly reinvented.
Your fashion obsession?
Christian Louboutin stilettos - I'm saving up!
Your favorite shop anywhere?
The Barneys Co Op in Soho, New York. It has a unique mix of both established and up-and-coming designers.
What do you feel best wearing?
Anything from Karen Walker. I can't go past Chuck Taylors, skinny leg jeans and an array of gold necklaces!
What is the one fashion rule that you always dress by?
Clothes should be an expression of your individuality. Dress for your figure, know your best assets and accentuate them.
Do you have any style icons?
Talitha Getty and Jackie O for her impeccably timeless and always classic look. I also love looking at old polaroids of my mum and her sisters in Spain. They dressed like expensive hippies!
Which do you think is the most stylish city?
Without a doubt New York, closely followed by Milan.
Earlier this year I visited my brother in Berlin and loved the eccentric mix of fashion and the rocker style!
Best city for shopping in the world?
London, as it has a fantastic mix of high street stores where you can find affordable yet fashionable pieces.
