'What makes you assume that out of all the millions of children in the world, I would particularly pick her two to spend a whole weekend with?'
I could practically hear Dad's brain ticking over, trying to find an answer to that one. Eventually he said, 'Well, what makes you think that out of all the millions of children in the world, you're not going to like Amanda's two?'
'I would have thought that was obvious.'
There was a pause, then Dad coughed and went for a nice bracing tone of voice.'Everything'll turn out fine, Sarah. You'll see.'
'What? For you, you mean?''No, I meant for you,' he replied. Then his voice softened. 'I only care about your happiness, you know,' he added.
Which was a big mistake. I could have gone on for ages about how he should have thought about that when he left us. But I've said it all before, so I just kept silent. Dad then stumbled on about all sorts of newsy little things that didn't interest me in the slightest, because they all contained the name of the home-wrecker.
