I asked if her children would be there, and he said it had been specially organised so that they would be, because she thought it would be more fun for us three to have some other children around. Apparently her children have been visiting their own father on alternate weekends for nearly a year now. Dad went on to tell me in this wonderful phone call of his that, what's more, the girls positively love the arrangement. They tell all their friends that they have two of everything two homes, two birthdays, two Christmases ..... Dad made it sound like something everybody ought to be doing. I couldn't stand the way he went on and on about it, because it was obvious he was just digging around for ways of making an awful situation seem half bearable.
'Just tell me one thing, Dad,' I'd interrupted him.
'Fire away,' he'd said.'
