Vicki Vuleta opened Design 55 with partner Gary Langsford last year, with the aim of making one-off and limited edition designer pieces available to local design aficionados. On display in the gallery-like space is an eclectic mix of contemporary designs. Think a Bocca lip sofa, beautiful chandeliers, Valentin Tinc's stag head, a selection of Fornasetti crockery, as well as rare vintage finds, all housed in a newly converted warehouse space below the pair's loft space home. Vuleta, a former TV producer, talks to us about her favourite design things.
1 Fornasetti drawers
This vintage piece is called "Architettura" and is a classic example of Fornasetti's use of imaginary architecture. The chest was designed by Piero Fornasetti in 1953 and is still being produced by his son Barnaba Fornasetti in Milan today. The bronze feet were originally designed by Gio Ponti for another Fornasetti cabinet, the Trumo, and appear on a number of Fornasetti items of furniture.
2 Yves Klein table
This is a classic piece of "art as furniture", which incorporates Yves Klein's signature colour "International Klein Blue". This table was designed by Yves Klein in 1961 and is currently made in limited numbers by the Yves Klein Foundation in Paris.
3 Antonio Murado painting
Gary gave me this for my birthday a couple of years ago. It hangs in our bedroom and is one of my favourite pieces of art in the house. Antonio is a Spanish artist from Madrid who has lived and worked in New York for the past 20 years. He painted this piece in a studio at Anawhata on the west coast of Auckland during a three-month visit to New Zealand in 2003.
4 Mario Cecchi desk
This stainless steel desk was designed by Italian architect Mario Cecchi in 1970 and is really a beautiful piece of sculpture. We use it in the house as a console or sideboard and any item placed on its surface looks spectacular. I love its elegance and simplicity of form.
5 Picasso plate
Produced in a limited edition of only 20, "Visage Geometrique aux Traits" is a solid silver platter designed by Picasso and handmade by Francois Hugo in France. There are a number of different designs in this series of works but this is one of the simplest and I feel it really captures the essence of Picasso.
6 iMac Computer
This is a great piece of design for an item that I use every day. It is already being featured in design books as a 21st Century classic.
7 Colette Paris
My favourite design store. You can buy music, beauty products and the latest fashion all under one roof - it also has a great cafe in the basement. A must to visit on any trip to Paris.
8 Gramercy Park hotel lobby
Designed by American artist Julian Schnabel, this boutique hotel lobby in New York City captures the luxury and opulence of a bygone era with a contempory twist. The 6m high ceilings, the use of timber and the Murano chandelier make this room feel more like Venice than New York.
9 Puppy vase
I love this vase. It is a limited edition multiple by American artist Jeff Koons. Koons' used the west highland terrier as the motif for his enormous flower puppy sculpture that was exhibited outside the MCA in Sydney a few years ago. The idea of producing a ceramic puppy sculpture that is a vase for holding flowers is typical of Koons' inventiveness as an artist.
10 White Cactus
This surrealist piece of sculpture is made of lacquered polyurethane and was designed in the 1970s by Guido Drocco and Franco Mello for Gufram. It is a fun conversation piece, but also functional in the form of a coat hook.
