KEY POINTS:
Hotels in Queenstown and the Wairarapa feature in a new book about international hotels.
Eichardt's Hotel on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and Greenhill - The Lodge near Napier, feature in More Places to Stay - Hotels of the World (Phantom House, $49.94).
The book was completed by Wellington photographer and publisher Grant Sheehan and travel writer Shelly-Maree Cassidy.
Sheehan said the hotels were not the most expensive in the world but some of the most interesting. The book lists 23 hotels including those in Australia, Europe, Asia and the United States.
Eichardt's is described as a former woolshed which was converted into a hotel to cater for thirsty gold miners in the 1800s. A tent went up beside it but that leaked and customers complained, so a more solid building programme began and renovations were made to the hotel.
Greenhill - The Lodge, built of heart totara with original matai timber floors and panels, is described as a fine example of high Victorian architecture. It has rambling gardens and a park-like setting.
The house has ornate pressed zinc ceilings imported from Britain.
The late Queen Mother once stayed at the hotel.
The book's cover features La Minervetta Maison in Italy's Sorrento.
