"Is Mum okay?"
"Yep. She's beautiful. Just beautiful."
"Can I see her?"
"Yeah. Soon. She's sleeping now. Oh, man, this is something else. Just something else." He slapped Luke on his back. `Hey, what have you got to eat, Lukie? I'm starving!"
"Nothing. We got nothing." Blue looked at him quizzically. "I mean it, Blue. We got nothing in the house."
"Eh? Jump in the car. We'll go get ourselves a feed. What do you feel like?"
Luke slammed the car door shut as Blue backed off the lawn, the tyres squealing again. Blue tooted and waved to people in the streets, braking when he saw his mates.
"Hey, party at Sherie's tonight. I'm a dad. How about that? We got a girl and she's beautiful."
"Good one, bro. Be there." They grinned and waved.
Outside the takeaway bar Blue plopped the paper bundle on the car bonnet and tore open the mound of steaming chips, fish and kutai in a greasy batter.
