By LIZ VAN DER LAARSE
Luke walked down the hall to the baby's room. The room that waited for his little brother or sister. Brother, it had to be a brother. He smiled. He'd make sure he taught it stuff it needed to know. Stuff he'd learnt on his own. Like how to stand up for yourself, how to tackle, how to punch, how to take no nonsense from anyone.
"I'll look after you, bro," he said to the empty room.
Tyres squealed. Honk! Honk! Luke peered through the net curtains. Blue was leaping from his car, shouting.
"Boy! Boy! Hey, Luke, where are you?"
Luke ran to the front door. "What? Where's Mum?"
"Mum? Where's Mum? Your mum's in hospital, boy. She's got you a little sister."
"A sister?"
"Yeah. She's a doll. Sweet as." Blue threw an arm around Luke's shoulder and squeezed. "I'm a dad. How about that?"
