Ninja Gaiden was inspired by a trio of titles that debuted during the 80s on Nintendo's NES system. In this new Xbox exclusive, players will reawaken Ryu Hayabusa, the original badass ninja and wielder of the infamous Dragon Blade.
Each level has an endless supply of enemies to hurl at you and many of your AI opponents are very capable with a sword.
Ryu can run and somersault, flip off poles, perform hacks and slashes and shoot arrows. The control system is uncomplicated but you still need to learn how to defend — health potions and save points are limited.
Button mashers are in for a difficult time. Each boss has varying attack patterns, so if you think you can commit his moves to memory, you're in for a shock.
Aside from bosses, a new style of foe is added and the key is learning how to deal with each of them. Again, learn to love the block button and it will get you through some almost impossible scrapes.
You would think Ninja Gaiden would be quite short but it isn't. Expect your first run-through to be between 20 and 30 hours. The game has two difficulty options, normal and hard. A third, near impossible, mode is added once you complete the game.
The backgrounds and 3D environments are breathtaking and the characters are animated and designed with the utmost detail and care. Developers Tecmo has even thrown in some extras. Collecting certain artefacts will unlock goodies, such as extra costumes as well as the three original NES versions.
Include with that Xbox Live options such as downloadable content, a future worldwide Ninja tournament and extra difficulty levels and you have the complete package.
Jaw-dropping visuals, perfect control and tough, yet accessible gameplay make Ninja Gaiden one of those rare titles that can exceed its own hype.
