Australian betting agency Centrebet has installed Nik Carlson as odds on favourite to win NZ Idol after Rongo Brightwell's elimination from the television talent quest show last night.
Nik's betting price means that Centrebet thinks he is more likely than not to triumph. This follows the exit of the likeable young Maori performer dubbed the "Mayor of Mohaka" by judge Frankie Stevens.
Nik, of Masterton, was Centrebet's hot favourite when the judges first unveiled the Top 24 but he gave up his position at the top of the bookmaker's market following a few poor performances.
"Punters are now born-again Nik fans," said Centrebet's Gerard Daffy, speaking from Sydney. "He's restored their faith."
On Sunday, Nik sang a version of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" as part of the show's 'Soul' theme night.
Teresa Bergman, who was the last contestant to make the top ten, only being added as a 'wildcard', surprised by appearing second favourite in the Centrebet calculations.
