Everyone stopped. Mrs Bird stood there with her mouth open. There was a round muddy mark on her forehead. Then she started to scream. She screamed and screamed. Mrs Kingsley came running out of the school.
"A football!" gasped Mrs Bird. "It came out of nowhere. These children ... they're mad. Completely mad."
"But Mrs Kingsley ..." I began.
"Don't say a word, Felicity Parker," she snapped. "This class has reduced three teachers to gibbering wrecks. It cannot go on. I have just finished interviewing Mrs MacKay's replacement. I think you'll find that she is a bit tougher than ..."
Mrs Bird coughed.
"Yes, well," Mrs Kingsley continued, "let's just say I think Miss Brown is the right woman for the job." I didn't like the sound of Miss Brown. But Mrs Kingsley hadn't finished.
