A 98-year-old New York man has been going the distance to see his ill wife of 50 years in a hospital in Rochester, making the miles-long trek on foot each day.
Luther Younger walks a total of about 12 miles each way to see his love, Waverlee Younger, who is now paralysed and has suffered from brain cancer since 2009.
'I ain't nothing without my wife,' Luther told Spectrum News. 'It's been a rough pull. It's been tough.'
Luther's wife has been a patient at Strong Memorial Hospital for over two weeks now, and during that time their daughter, Lutheta Younger, has offered to give him a ride, if he can wait until she's available to do so, the Daily Mail reports.
'He still says, "Nope I have to get out there to my wife. I have to go,"' she said.
A GoFundMe account was created on Friday by Lutheta to help the family cover Waverlee's medical costs and provide transportation for Luther, to and from the hospital.
The smitten Marine and Korean War veteran shared sweet words about Waverlee, recalling his favorite ways she'd show him affection over their many decades together.
'She's the best cup of tea I ever had,' Luther said.
'She would come in and kiss me and say "baby" and feed me in the bed and this is what I need right here.'
It's that intense emotion that fuels Luther's drive to get to his wife, as soon as possible, every day.
'He doesn't have to [walk], but he wants to,' Lutheta said. 'I can drive him. He just doesn't want to wait; he's impatient.'
She added: 'The whole time she was sick, he would stay overnight [in the hospital].' He wouldn't leave her.'
Lutheta said her mother was given five years to live when she was first diagnosed with brain cancer. That was nine years ago.
Luther's incredible story of what lengths he'll go to in order to be there for the love of his life came to light when a man picked him up on the side of the highway on August 14.
Dan Bookhart spotted Luther walking along Interstate 390 after just having left the airport that day.
'My upbringing; when you see somebody elderly, when you see somebody struggling when it's raining,' he said.
'I had to pick him up and I couldn't be one of the ones who would just drive by.'
Lutheta thanked him for his help, pointing out that her dad is in good health and very active.
