KEY POINTS:
A Nelson constable has become the first policeman on the beat in New Zealand to wear a turban as part of his uniform.
Constable Jagmohan Malhi, who has worked as a policeman in Nelson for three years, has been wearing a cap made for Sikh police officers.
But now he will wear a specially designed New Zealand Police turban which is blue in colour and has the police crest on the front.
The Sikh faith requires devotees to cover their head with a turban or patka at all times, including while on duty.
Nelson Bays Area Commander Inspector Brian McGurk said the turban was a reflection of New Zealand Police becoming more diverse.
"We are delighted that we have been able to help one of our officers to nurture his religious and cultural beliefs," he said.
The design of the cap follows consultation between Mr Malhi, his supervisors and police managers as well as the Police Uniform Standards Coordinator, the Police Ethnic Responsiveness Coordinator and members of the Sikh community in New Zealand.
