Bonny Prince George is back sleeping snugly at Kensington Palace in London but one of New Zealand's poorest families now has their baby tucked up in a bed fit for a king.
The Royal Visit Office told the
Herald on Sunday
the barely used cot bought for George to sleep in at Government House in Wellington during the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's recent New Zealand tour had gone to a "worthy" home.
The office bought pieces of baby furniture to transform one of the many stately bedrooms at the Governor-General's official residence into a royal nursery.
"The few items we had have been donated anonymously in the community to those in need," said a spokesman for the office this week.
Plunket spokesman Zac Prendergast said the Royal Visit Office asked his organisation to identify a family who could make good use of a cot, mattress and bedding.
"It was given to Plunket to distribute to a family with high needs, with a stipulation there would be no commercial gain or identification with the royal family."
Prendergast said he did not know where the family gifted the royal nursery furniture lived.
"It could be anywhere in New Zealand."
The bedding was laundered before it was given away.
A car seat intended for the young Prince but never used was put into the Plunket car-seat hire pool, said Prendergast.
During the Cambridges' 10-day visit in April, George stayed in Wellington with his Spanish nanny, Maria Borrallo, while the Duke and Duchess jetted around the country to meet New Zealanders.
She never told them the five-course meal was vegan. So a cousin decided to act.
