Kiwi parents care for their children more than eight hours a day on average, but mothers spend more time than fathers during the week.
Statistics New Zealand yesterday released analysis on the Caring for Children report, which shows the way childcare is shared between parents.
Parents with children aged under 14 years spend on average eight hours and 18 minutes a day caring for their children, and mothers on average spend four hours a day more than fathers caring for children.
The gap between parents' care is smaller at weekends, when partnered fathers spend close to nine hours caring for children, up from five on weekdays.
"Within couples ... when both mothers and fathers work fulltime, fathers are more likely to be involved in at least half of all parental childcare," social statistics manager Steve Manning said.
