A bunch of Kiwi mums and their bubs took part in a series of Global Big Latch On events around the country yesterday.
That included Isis McKay with 18-month-old Ruby, Rose Fisher with 10-month-old Artemis, and Chelsea Schwarzenberger with 3-month-old Elliott, who were at the MAMA maternity centre in Sandringham, Auckland, yesterday feeding their children for the event during World Breastfeeding Week.
Women's Health Action started the Latch On event in New Zealand in 2005, before it was introducted in the US in 2010. That year 2045 babies latched on during the one minute count. But since then, it has grown enormously. Last year 17,290 children were breastfed across 23 countries.
This year the event stretches over three days as mums gather at local community centres in towns and cities around the world to feed their children and promote the benefits of breastfeeding.
As of last night the total number of children breastfed stood at 3956 but there is still one day to go here - as well as the rest of the world - to beat last year's total.
