KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
Herald rating: * * *
Enjoyable Middle Ages romp from director Ridley Scott. Orlando Bloom stars as Balian, a French blacksmith who inherits land and an army in the Middle East. Better than most other ancient epics like Troy, Alexander and King Arthur, and set in Jerusalem circa 1184, when Muslims and Christians co-existed and allowed each other to worship in their own way. Edward Norton plays the masked leper King Baldwin. (2005)

HAPPINESS
Herald rating: * * * *
Comedy from director Todd Solondz. Many movies look for the seedy underbelly in suburban life, but this one takes it one step closer to plain uncomfortable viewing, revealing the supposed abnormalities of a related group of characters, and deals with taboo subjects such as unhealthy obsession and paedophilia. Stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Lara Flynn Boyle and Ben Gazzara. (1998)
