By MARGARET MAHY
Of course, everyone with a new long nose is bound to have a few difficulties. Jinkie had trouble with birds that liked to perch on her new quizzybeak, pecking and preening. But what fun she had strolling down Snapper Street every morning!
"The twins' nappies need changing, Mrs Buster," she called out to one neighbour. And, "That's great new soap you are using, Mr Longfellow."
"Mrs Binns, I can smell a terrible, old, forgotten sausage at the back of your fridge. It's on the second shelf down."
You would think the Snapper Street residents might have grown sick of Jinkie Jensen-Jones smelling out their secrets, but not a bit of it. As she walked home from school, they leaned over their gates, bribing her in with lemonade and cake, for everyone was eager to sniff out the secrets of their next-door neighbours.
