By MARGARET MAHY
"There's nothing for it! I'll have to climb the tree," muttered Jinkie. So she climbed up and up, then out and over.
Down below, the magician was sharing scones covered in pink cream and coal-dust with a small dragon. The magician was wearing a tall, pointed hat with stars and moons painted on it. He had long, twiddling fingers with which he was twiddling scones from the plate into his mouth. A bottle of dragon champagne, a particularly dangerous drink, stood in the centre of the table.
Jinkie, balancing breathlessly on a branch overhead, heard the magician offer another six scones to the dragon and, at that exact moment, she slipped and fell - BANG! - right on top of the scones. The terrified dragon flapped away, breathing out flames and accidentally setting fire to a branch of the tree.
