Metallica has grabbed the No 1 spot with the debut of St Anger, its first studio album in more than five years.
On the verge of splintering a few years ago, the veteran heavy metal act's recent moves to get in touch with its vulnerable side appear to have paid off.
St Anger, produced after fractious band members hired a therapist to help them to work better as a team, sold a whopping 418,000 copies during the sales week ended Sunday, according to retail sales track Nielsen SoundScan.
By comparison, Metallica's last studio album, Reload, entered the charts at No 1 in 1997, with 435,000 copies sold in its first week.
That album went on to sell 3.7 million copies in the United States.
