They will do just about anything to impress a woman - now it seems that men can add eating to the list.
Researchers found that men dining with women ate almost twice as much in what they said was a "feat of eating" akin to a culinary show of strength.
The team from Cornell University in the US recorded the number of pizza slices and bowls of salad each diner consumed at an all-you-can-eat pizzeria. Men not only stacked up the pizza slices when with women - 93 per cent more - but also piled on the salad (86 per cent more).
Study author Kevin Kniffin said men appeared to be trying to impress the opposite sex. "Instead of a feat of strength, it's a feat of eating," he said.
He added that, ironically, in the long run it would have the opposite effect by making men overweight and unattractive. "People should calm down when eating with members of the opposite sex," said Professor Kniffin.
