LONDON - Queen of pop Madonna recorded her 11th British number one in the music charts on Sunday with her new single "Hung Up" which samples heavily from the 1979 Abba hit "Gimme Gimme Gimme".
Madonna, 47, who had her first number one in the country in 1985, released the single from her new album "Confessions on a Dancefloor".
Her success knocked Irish boyband Westlife into second place with their ballad "You Raise Me Up" which had previously spent two weeks in the top spot, according to the Official UK Charts Company.
New British band Son of Dork, which includes former Busted member James Bourne, entered the charts in third place with their single "Ticket Outta Loserville".
Another singer to enter the charts after being in a successful boyband was Simon Webbe who had previously been a member of "Blue". His single "No Worries" was a new entry in at fourth place.
Sheffield Rockers Arctic Monkeys dropped three places to fifth with "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" while R&B singer Craig David dropped two places to sixth with "Don't Love You No More".
American singer-producer Pharrell Williams dropped four places to seventh with "Can I Have It Like That", featuring singer Gwen Stefani.
Los Angeles burlesque act The Pussycat Dolls featuring Busta Rhymes were in eighth spot, down two places from last week, with "Don't Cha", while Sugababes were in at ninth spot from fifth with "Push The Button".
Singer Robbie Williams rounded out the top 10 with "Tripping".
