By FLEUR BEALE
Mrs Carmody had excelled herself this time. You will all have this perfect for your next lesson, she'd said. And, thought Lacey, she would too or die in the attempt. That was so Mrs Carmody. She always gave them stuff with a bit of a twist, stuff that was never as easy as it looked. She danced the steps carefully, without the music. Kick, ball-change, pas de bourree, pirouette. That was fine, she could do that.
She put the music on. The steps were right but they wouldn't flow; the unusual rhythm tripped her every time.
Kick, ball-change. Missed the beat. She counted and started again. Kick, ball-change, pas de bouree, pirouette. Her feet and brain worked together, the rest of the world forgotten.
