Lacey Turner stared at her mother. "You're going to buy a what?
Mum's face went dreamy and excited all at the same time. "A donkey! A dear little baby donkey. Want to come and look at it?"
Instead, Lacey looked out the window at the back lawn. A donkey? On that bit of grass? "No thanks."
Jonny and Martin didn't need to be asked. "Can we come?" We'll be good!"
It amazed Lacey the way they so often said the same words at the exact same second. Sure, they were identical twins but Mum and Dad were doing all the things that were meant to turn them into individuals _ different haircuts, different clothes. But they still seemed to have a secret telephone line into each other's heads.
"It's an animal, Jonny," Lacey said. "It'll give you asthma."
She gave her mother a 'how could you be so mean?' look.
How could she build up his hopes like this?
"It mightn't," Jonny said, "because horses don't,"
"We've never been near a donkey yet," Martin added.
