Expressions of Aucklanders' love for their city and one another are spreading over the downtown Bucklands Building for the start of the AK05 festival today.
"Love Letters" is not just about romantic love. It is an art exhibition aimed at celebrating Aucklanders love for their city, their friends, family and sweethearts.
Between 8000 and 10,000 letters have already been received, via email and in the post, and organisers expect the building to be eventually covered from top to bottom. Heart of the City marketing manager Liz Smith said that in a similar exhibition in Berlin, an old post office had been covered in thousands of letters. "We're expecting Aucklanders will also wear their hearts on the building for AK05 - it's not every day you get to be part of something that's never been done here before," she said. Love letter writers also get the chance to go in a draw to win one of three trips to Melbourne.
