Tomorrow is the seventh annual Montana Poetry Day - a day, organisers say, that "shines light on an art-form that is otherwise disguised in the songs, the stories and conversations that make up our everyday life".
They're a versatile lot, those poets, and do not conform to stereotypes. Come Friday, they'll be reading, singing, even raving, in venues ranging from bars to libraries, to bookshops, to the street.
Ponsonby's Grand Central Bar will host events nightly through the week from today; the Women's Bookshop hosts poets Kapka Kassabova (Someone Else's Life) and Anne Kennedy (Sing Song) on Friday at 5.30pm; Auckland Central Library hosts Aural Ink, three hours of poetic celebration from noon to 3pm on Friday; Poets will read their work at the Signal Gallery in West Auckland from 7.30pm; the Temple on Queen St is running a poetry slam with a $300 prize from 7.30pm to 11.30pm.
There are many other events around Auckland: look at www.booksellers.co.nz.
