"But this was a public place and we were not doing anything wrong. I am quite fierce and not a shy girl so I brushed it off. But it did leave me a bit shaky.
"It's 2015, not 1815. We honestly did not think this would happen here."
Miss Merlo said she was stunned when people started to protest after the couple had been kissing for less than a minute.
"We weren't provoking reaction or looking for a reaction. Their tongues were not down each other's throats. They were touching each other but not inappropriately."
The couple, from West Wales, have been together for two and a half years and both work as adult performance artists.
Several middle-aged women in the crowd took offence at the public display of affection.
One onlooker said: "One of the ladies approached the couple and told them how disgusting they were and insisted they stopped.
"The girls tried to laugh it off but were shocked and upset, then the security man asked the girls to stop or to move on."
She added that the pair were supported by those around them at the festival. She said: "Two straight guys came up and publicly supported the girls by kissing each other in public.
"It was a jokey, possibly drunken, show of support but it received a round of applause and a few cheers from some onlookers."
Organisers Cardiff Council last night defended the reaction of the festival steward.
A spokesman said: "Festival stewards received a number of complaints from members of the public about a couple who were engaged in a very strong display of public affection at the festival.
"Once the couple in question had been identified a steward approached them.
"They reminded them that sexual behaviour of this level was inappropriate for what is very much a family event. At no time did any council employee ask the couple to leave.
"The same course of action would have been taken regardless of the sexual orientation of the individuals involved."
