Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong could be shown in 3-D.
Film industry magazine the Hollywood Reporter said yesterday that Californian post-production company In-Three was working on a 3-D format.
The company's technology would see audiences wearing special glasses and would not require theatres to have special screens.
In-Three converts conventional live-action animated movies into 3-D. Exhibitors have previously resisted the idea because of replacement and cleaning costs of the glasses.
The magazine said the 3-D version of King Kong was likely to be shown in cinemas in 2006.
Jackson was seen using a 3-D camera during the shoot of King Kong.
Before the filming began Jackson had said he considered making a 3-D version.
However the Hollywood Reporter also said that Universal Pictures, which will distribute King Kong, denied any plans to have the film redistributed in 3-D.
Jackson could not be contacted for comment yesterday.
King Kong will have its world premiere in New York early in December, and the New Zealand premiere on December 14.
