Like today, for instance. Dad would've argued that this trip was a waste of time and money, and it wouldn't do anything to encourage Matthew to become a football rep and later a lawyer like him. Matthew
was tired of hearing his father say there'd always been a lawyer in the Cameron family.
And football! Matthew knew that with his rounded body and solid legs he'd have to lose a few kilos if he was ever going to play football, or any other sport for that matter. He couldn't run fast and he wasn't much good at catching a ball either.
Photography was his specialty. In a few years he wanted to be making his living taking photographs. He'd won three competitions already, and after this trip he'd have enough material for his Living History display. He hoped he'd win a prize for that, too.
Dad thought all this business with a camera was nonsense, and he refused to take Matthew's interest in history seriously either.
Matthew had a special love for local history - history that didn't come out of a book; history you could see first-hand. When Matthew told his mother how he wanted to spend his birthday, she said, "Great! Let's all go."
Annabelle wanted to celebrate Matthew's birthday at a new restaurant that had just opened in town, but Mum said, "We can go there when it's your birthday, Annabelle. This is Matthew's day."
