Visiting had already started when they reached the hospital. Joseph's mum was sitting up in bed. She wore more make-up than usual, and a new tortoiseshell comb in her hair.
"I hope you have been eating properly," was the first thing she said when they were seated at the bedside.
"No problem," said Joseph's dad.
"Marvellous meals," said Joseph, who wasn't one to tell tales.
His mum glanced from one to the other.
"I've got a pair of fibbers," she said, smiling. "Like father, like son."
