While Mum, Dad and Gran were engrossed in a game with an old paint tin that involved a lot of clattering and squawking, Kiri and Tama found an old damp mattress and began pulling it to bits. First they used their strong beaks to rip through the fabric. Then they plucked out big, soft chunks of foam rubber. And finally, by pulling together, they ri
pped out the large rusty springs that went boing! when they escaped from the mattress.
They were stilling playing with the mattress when Dad said, "OK, kids, let's go. Mum and Gran want to check the bins up at the lookout."
"Oh, but Dad," chorused Kiri and Tama.
"We haven't finished pulling this springy thing to bits," said Kiri.
"There'll be people-on-wheels at the lookout," Dad said. "Plenty to pull apart there."
Kiri and Tama knew there were two kinds of people: the ordinary ones who walked around on their legs with lots of things strapped to their backs, and the other kind - people-on-wheels.
