Tama hopped up and down excitedly. "Did you see me, Dad? Did you see me flying?"
"Yes, son. Good victory roll." Dad winked at him, remembering how, as a young bird himself, he'd won the annual aerobatics competition two years running.
"Too flashy by half!" squawked Gran, and lurched off towards the rubbish bags. "Flap-flap-glide," she muttered. "That's how it's always been and that's how it always will be. Young birds today ..." Mum and Dad showed Kiri and Tama how to get the rubbish out of the bags by cutting a small door with their beaks.
Kiri picked a particularly strong-smelling bag and cut a perfect door in the side. Then she jumped on top of the bag and the rubbish spilled out into a neat pile on the ground.
Tama, his head full of difficult aerobatic manoeuvres, cut his door far too big and he was almost buried underneath the rubbish when it exploded from the bag.
