Isn't that what you said, Neville?' 'At least three quarters,' agreed Neville, nodding gloomily. 'That's what the sparrows told me. They saw the programme last night through the TV shop window.'

'Well!' said Doris, hotly, 'what I want to know is, are we going to sit around protecting a pampered parrot from nothing in particular when our feathery brothers and sisters are being kidnapped and starved to death just because some human somewhere fancies an interesting pet?"

'I am not pampered!' cried Neville angrily. 'The very idea! I'll have you know ...'
