'All right, you lot, calm down!' interjected Horace. 'Nobody's going to sit around doing nothing. Not if I have anything to do with it. If only half of what those sparrows said is true then this is a very serious matter. And that's precisely why we can't rush into things. Any action we take needs to be carefully thought out. We can't just go and peck a few pet shop owners, however much you might feel like it, Doris. Anyway, the majority of them are completely innocent.'
'I'm for pecking them anyway!' muttered Boris.
'Luckily, I didn't hear that,' said Horace, giving Boris a look. 'We need to use our skill and intelligence,' he continued, 'to track down the guilty ones and bring them to justice.'
The others nodded. This sounded sensible.
Horace was the canaries' leader. He made a habit of being sensible. The canaries held him in great awe and respect.
After all, it was Horace who had taken a group of rather grumpy caged canaries in a pet shop window, successfully planned their escape, and turned them into the famous, super-fit flying force they are today.
