"What are you? Some soft bit of marshmallow that can't wear the same underpants for three days?" He got to the togs and towel and his eyebrows climbed into his hair. "Now these are interesting. We're not going to some beach resort. What's wrong with swimming in your shorts? And the sun will dry you just as well as any fluffy towel will."
He took out two of the T-shirts too. He threw my soap and toothpaste out along with my hairbrush and the computer game. "You'll survive without all that, Jemmy. It's all extra weight. Mark my words, you'll be glad you don't have them after we've been walking a few hours."
"At least we'll have the place to ourselves," I said. "We'll stink so much by the time we're done with this that nobody'll come near us."
Pa's eyebrows twitched together, but he decided to make a joke of it. "Smelling bad is just about the smartest thing we can do if we get lost. That way, the sniffer dogs will be able to find us more easily if they need to." He wanted me to leave my bedroll behind, too. I didn't say anything, but when he'd packed everything back up, I strapped it on along with my sleeping bag. I also put my game back in.
While he fiddled with his own gear and loaded everything into the car, I phoned my friend Jonno.
"You are so lucky!" he gasped.
