"Burglar," said Denzil quickly. He hated the word thief, burglar was a far better title, more important and dignified. ""I was a burglar."
"That's nothing to be proud of. You're supposed to be a wizard. You're supposed to live up to the honour and dignity of your calling, not go around falling into flour bins and looking like an animated scarecrow." "That's why," said Denzil, wringing his hands pleadingly. "I really need it, master."
"Need what?"
"Your ceremonial robe, the one with rainbows and silver stars and glittering suns. I promise I'll take care of it. I won't let it drag in the mud, and I won't spill apple cider on it, or get toffee apple all over it, and - Oh, lord - just let me wear it to the fair, and I'll be good forever. I promise. I swear it."
"I gave you my answer," said Valvasor, bending over the herbs again.
Denzil stuck out his tongue, very quickly, and made for the door.
"Wait!" called Valvasor.
Denzil turned back, scarlet-faced. "I wasn't poking out my tongue, master," he said. "Honest. It just popped out all by itself."
"Lizards' tongues do that," said Valvasor, thoughtfully. "I would be very careful, if I were you.
